Conference Recap: Fellowship, Inspiration, and New Connections

I just got back from the conference and wanted to give a quick report while it was fresh in my mind. This is a brief summary of what happened but if you’re curious about some more details (including pics and videos!) check out my channel on the TACO Discord.

Day 1: Arrival and Initial Impressions

Morning Update:

Chatted with Scott “BornAgainGamer,” the host of the TACO Talks podcast, over a pleasant lunch. Arriving at the hotel and conference after a smooth trip (thanks to an amazing Spotify playlist), I managed to get my book into the conference bookstore, which was very exciting. The conference was hosted at Bayview Glen Alliance, the church that sponsors me as a full-time digital missionary. It’s a massive church with incredible tech and worship services!

Evening Reflection:
I had a fascinating break-time conversation with a representative from IJM: International Justice Mission, who shared eye-opening insights about their work to end human trafficking and abuses globally. I was shocked to learn about the prevalence of live-streamed child abuse, especially in the Philippines, and Canada’s disturbing ranking in consuming this “content.” The gravity of this issue is profound, and it highlights the need for increased awareness and action. I’ve contacted him to learn more.

Night Thoughts:
The evening was filled with fantastic music, an enthusiastic assembly, and passionate preaching. Despite my hesitancy to participate, I appreciated the powerful message about obeying the Great Commission delivered by an Indian minister from Australia (yep, I said that right).

Day 2: Worship, Communion, and Connections

Morning Update:

The day started with worship and communion (3 in a row with different emphases!). The speaker spoke of keeping short accounts with God and each other, leading to a beautiful time of reconciliation. Even pastors can struggle with bitterness or unforgiveness, making these moments of healing deeply important and impactful.

Afternoon Insights:
I encountered a man named Genghis Chan, which made me chuckle when they mispronounced his name as Khan on stage.

Lunch Reflection:
I had a wonderful lunch with the Bayview Glen church staff, invited by the Sr. Pastor Terry Sanderson. It was heartwarming to feel so supported and appreciated, as staff members continually came in to greet me. I got to nerd out about future plans and felt genuinely valued.

Day 3: Panels, Business, and Personal Insights

Morning Reflection:

Listened to an insightful panel about finding and developing new leaders and it made me wonder how TACO can better serve in leadership and personal development. It made me ponder ways to enhance our support beyond classes, streams, and Discord groups.

Afternoon Thoughts:
Reflected on business meetings and the importance of organizational details. Though I once found these meetings tedious, I now see their value in fostering unity and efficiency within the group. These sessions revealed this denomination’s patient, gracious, and humorous approach to seeking God’s will, problem-solving, and their respect for the significance of “boring business stuff.”

Evening Reflection:
I delivered my talk, focusing on how content creation reaches those beyond traditional ministries. It was well received, with lots of questions and post-talk conversations. Other speakers, including Cymone (Content Creator) ,Brett (E-Sports Chaplain), Cory (Online Pastor), and Global Missionary Tech (David), did an excellent job too. Please pray for fruitful partnerships and connections to come from this event.

Night Update:
The evening ended with a pizza chat, though only three out of eight RSVPd attendees came. Despite the small turnout, the discussions were meaningful, covering topics like digital ministry and welcoming strategies in digital spaces. The night concluded with a worship and prayer service, making it a fulfilling end to a long day.

Day 4: Heroes of Faith and Final Farewells

Morning Reflection:
Learned about “Creative Access Countries,” where missionaries go undercover due to persecution. The bravery of these individuals is inspiring, as they risk their lives to share the gospel and combat human trafficking, slavery, and poverty.

Midday Update:

Met a pastor from Ukraine, whose ministry is amidst a literal war zone. He requested prayers for his family, the churches he serves, and his country. Seeing his dedication was both humbling and motivating.

Afternoon Reflection:
As I prepared to leave early to avoid Toronto rush hour, I was thrilled to find that my book sold some copies! As I was leaving the bookstore I suddenly had the idea to gift a copy to the president of Ambrose University who had written his doctorate on digital missions, which felt like a divine connection. I also bumped into the New Ventures boss, Amanda, who told me to make sure to contact her about some ideas for me to speak at some churches. That was super encouraging! As I left the building I even got to thank some special people who have supported me along the way.

Home Time:

Drove 30 minutes out of my way for a selfie with BornAgainGamer!
